Development of Communicative Competence in an Elementary School Pupil

The focus of this thesis is to explore the development of communicative competence in an elementary school pupil. The research aims to analyse the specific areas of lexical and grammatical competence development in this pupil. The theoretical part of the research defines key terms related to communication. Moreover, it is focused on childrens' speech with the emphasis on the acquisition of specific means of communication that constitute the communicative competence. It also mentions various speech disorders which may follow the linguistic phenomenon of ontogenesis. It introduces several methods which can be used to analyse the child's speech level. The focus of the research is the vocabulary diversity of an elementary pupil (2nd grade student), calculated using the Type-Token ratio (TTR). The research also focuses on the complexity of syntax structures, represented by the number of simple and more complicated sentences in a speech. Data were collected by recording non- scripted interviews over a 6-month period. Three interviews were spontaneous, while the remaining three were centred around a specific topic. The topic of the bachelor thesis is the ontogenesis of children's speech. The theoretical part of the work aims to give a comprehensive overview of the acquisition of speech. It presents historically different concepts of language acquisition and describes development phases according to Ohnesorg and Lejsek. Using authentic literary texts to develop reading skills in English at middle school level

This diploma thesis focuses on the usage of authentic literary texts in English teaching at middle school level. Authentic texts present a language input which helps natural language acquisition. The theoretical part is based on the description of conditions for language acquisition, types of authentic texts and a lesson procedure that deals with them. The practical part is realized through the lesson plan of three English lessons at middle school level. The aims of the lessons are to develop reading skills by using authentic texts and to support pupils' reading literacy.
Using podcasts to teach English to young learners

This bachelor thesis deals with podcasts as a way of teaching the English language, mainly focused on children aged 5-7 years before the start of their school education. The podcasts are designed to introduce the English language to children with the help of their first language through spoken audio fairy tales without the help of visual aids. The aim of the thesis is to find out whether systematic use of the first language in audio material for beginning young learners can have a positive impact on their motivation and willingness to listen. The aim of the theoretical part was to gain the necessary knowledge to prepare such podcasts effectively. It therefore explores effective ways of teaching English to young learners, the use of stories to teach English, and the role of the first language in foreign language learning. The practical part reports on research conducted among parents of Czech and Slovak children who had not enjoyed listening to English audio materials prior to the research. The parents agreed on testing a series of the author's original podcasts with their children, and observing their reactions. Romance influence on English Wordstock

Title of the bachelor thesis: Romance Influence on the English Wordstock Key words: History of English, borrowing, loan word, lexicalization, language acquisition, second language, language interference. Abstract The bachelor thesis Romance Influence on the English Wordstock is concerned with the Romance impacts on English, which is most noticeable in its wordstock, and simultaneously it tries to find out what the awareness of learners of English of these influences is. The practical part is based on research in the form of a questionnaire which was distributed among English students of the Faculty of Education, Charles University in Prague and which consists of four exercises where various Romance specifics can be found. The research revealed that students do not have a particular cognizance of Romance influence but it showed that the longer the students study English, the fewer problems they have with the words coming from Romance languages. It also studied whether students who know the French or Latin language have an advantage when acquiring the English vocabulary. The bachelor thesis deals with the topic of poor readers in the context of reading comprehension. Poor readers are diverse group of readers, who are inferior to normal-reading peers in various aspects of reading. Reading comprehension is crucial skill in the process of acquiring, learning and using informations from every area of human activity. The aim of this thesis is to generally map the concept of poor readers and to identify specific problems shown by poor readers in reading comprehension tests. The theoretical part presents the concepts of mapping the issue, such as literacy, educational methods, reading comprehension. The main part focuses on the characteristics and specifics of poor readers in the context of the simple view of reading. Apart from this, other types of readers such as dyslectisc and poor comprehenders are described and compared to poor readers. Teaching English Through English: Giving Instructions at A1-A2 level students

This diploma thesis aims at presenting principles and techniques of giving instructions during English lessons and their practical use. It stresses the awareness of the importance of delivering clear and understandable instructions and of their influence on students' comprehension. Theoretical part of this thesis describes general rules of giving instructions and focuses on instruction techniques suitable for students' learning styles. It also deals with the language of instruction appropriate for A1 - A2 level students. Practical part consists of applying the theoretical principals in practice through an action research. The aim of the practical part is the improvement of the author's instructions. The findings have shown that modifying the language of instruction as well as using various verbal and non- verbal instruction techniques promotes the students' comprehension of instructions.
